University: Asuu is needed a notice of strike

The union of the universities of academic staff (Asuu) warned that another national strike is imminent unless federal and state governments urgently deal with unsolved issues in public universities.

In a declaration of his National Secretariat complex of Festus Iyayi, University of Abuja, president of the Asuu, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, criticized the recent certainty of the Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa that the strikes of the teachers had finished, calling him “thought of spiggio” without actions of the tangible government.

Piwuna said that the teachers are working under serious difficulties, teaching on empty stomachs, using poorly equipped libraries and workshops and fighting to satisfy personal financial obligations – while they are unjust blamed to have produced unemployed graduates.

The union accused the subsequent administrations of having violated the 2009 FGN-Asuu agreement, which should have been renegotiated since 2012. He observed that despite having received a renegotiated project by the Yayale Ahmed Committee in December 2024, the government did not end the process eight months.

Key requests include better service conditions, increase in funding, university autonomy and reforms to the National University Commission (NUC) and the joint admission and enrollment committee (Jamb).

Asuu also denounced political interference in the appointments of the vice -changing and condemned the salary management system and integrated staff (iPPi) as corrupt and discriminatory.

“Our members are tired of empty promises. The time to act is now,” said Piwuna, exhorting the Nigerians to push the government to prevent another interruption of the university system.
