The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) had issued an ultimatum in April to the Federal Government to complete the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement.
The union gave the ultimatum in a communiqué issued at the end of the 54th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Ekiti State University on Sunday.and signed by its National President, Mr Muhammad Ibrahim.
SSANU warned that failure to complete the 2009 renegotiation agreement could trigger indefinite strikes at universities.
The union expressed concern over what it described as slow and inconclusive renegotiations between the government and non-teaching unions.
According to the union, the government should, without further delay, reconvene and complete the renegotiation process in a fair, transparent and time-bound manner.
“In view of this, SSANU hereby issues a final ultimatum to the federal government from April 1 to April 30, 2026, to complete the renegotiation process and sign the agreement.

“If the government fails to do this within this period, the union will have no choice but to work with its partners in the NASU and SSANU Joint Action Committee (JAC) to initiate indefinite industrial action,” the communique said.
SSANU condemned the delay in payment of salaries and non-payment of salary increases, and stated that the situation had exacerbated difficulties among members.
They called for immediate payment of unpaid salaries and implementation of a unified salary payment platform, and recommended Remita.
The union also condemned the exclusion of some categories of workers from the N50 billion in-kind benefits approved for 2022, and insisted that all eligible staff in universities and research institutions be included without discrimination.
The report urges the federal government to tackle rising inflation through wage reviews and strengthening social protection measures.
