Unwanted pregnancy, fraudster drives 19-year-old to attempt suicide

A young woman’s life was saved thanks to the swift intervention of Lagos police officers yesterday.

According to reports, a 19-year-old woman was found in a state of distress, attempting suicide.

State Police Public Relations, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in his statement on Thursday via X, said the incident occurred on June 29, 2024.

The statement noted that the rescue operation began after a concerned resident alerted police at around 2 p.m.

Informants reported that a young woman tried to swallow insecticide.

“Officers immediately responded to the report and were dispatched to the scene where the girl was found and prevented from harming herself,” Hundeyin said.

The rescued woman, whose identity is being withheld for privacy reasons, revealed the circumstances that led to the desperate act.

She reportedly admitted to experiencing severe emotional distress stemming from two main issues: an unplanned pregnancy and financial fraud.

“She revealed that she was impregnated by a man who later denied responsibility for her pregnancy. In addition, she had been the victim of a fraud that took her earnings from her Point of Sale (POS) business, which further exacerbated her emotional and financial difficulties,” the police statement said.

Police have confirmed that the young woman is now receiving the necessary psychological support.

Meanwhile, an investigation has been launched to identify and arrest those involved in his predicament.

The Lagos State Police Command further stressed the importance of mental health awareness.
