The Nigerian Railways Corporation (NRC) on Monday confirmed that several passengers sustained injuries in a train accident along the Abuja-Kaduna railway corridor.
NRC Executive Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, said in a statement that the incident occurred at 10.30am near Asham.
According to him, the accident involved the rear locomotive and the passenger carriage.
Opeifa said: “Initial reports indicate that the rear locomotive came into contact with the rear locomotive directly next to it (rear) due to a clutch problem.
“Several passengers sustained injuries and were immediately treated and taken to the nearest medical facility for appropriate medical treatment. No fatalities were recorded.

“Emergency response protocols were immediately activated, and the relevant technical teams have been deployed to the location.
“The Safety Investigation Bureau (SIB) is also on site to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident in accordance with established safety procedures.”
The NRC boss said the train arrived at Idu Station at 10.39am, 38 minutes behind schedule due to the time given to remove the rear locomotive and carriage Sp 0006.
“The company assures the public that safety remains its top priority, and all necessary measures are being taken to address this situation and ensure the continued safe operation of train services.
“Further details will be communicated as more information becomes available,” he added
