Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, has explained the reasons for his resignation from the post he has held for more than six years.
Abubakar submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu on Saturday in Abuja.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him as Director-General of the NIA on January 11, 2018.
The former president extended the NIA chief’s term until December 31, 2021.
In a chat with State House reporters after a meeting with President Tinubu, the NIA boss said he resigned from his post for family reasons.
He also thanked the president for allowing him to serve for 15 months in his administration.
The NIA chief was accompanied at the meeting by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.
Abubakar said: “There are several reasons why someone would do that. Some personal family issues, but really nothing serious, and the friendship will continue.
“I have discussed with the President, he is very understanding, and I promise to remain steadfast on the country’s security issues and situation.
“After the briefing, I submitted my resignation and the President graciously approved and accepted the resignation.
“I am grateful to him for giving me the opportunity to serve in Nigeria under his transformational leadership for 15 months, which is a very rare thing.”
