US 2024: Only important presidents will be shot, Trump brags as campaign resumes

Former US President Donald Trump yesterday resumed his presidential campaign since a failed assassination attempt on him during a campaign rally in July in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Speaking at a town hall meeting with supporters in Flint, a troubled industrial city that was once the jewel of the US auto industry in the state of Michigan before factories closed due to foreign competition, he boasted that “only important presidents get shot” while praising his US presidential challenger Kamala Harris for calling him to ask how he was doing.

Trump linked what the FBI called a foiled assassination attempt on him Sunday at his Florida golf course to his pledge to impose high tariffs on car imports from Mexico and China.

“Then you wonder why I was shot, right? You know, only important presidents get shot,” Trump said.

Harris, who is campaigning in another state, Pennsylvania, said Tuesday that she had reached out to the former president after the thwarted attack.

“I checked on him to make sure he was okay. And I told him what I’ve said publicly — there is no place for political violence in our country,” Harris said in an interview with the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).

The White House described it as a “cordial and brief conversation.” Trump said Harris “couldn’t have been nicer.”

Trump said the would-be shooter was a follower of what he called the rhetoric of President Joe Biden and Harris that he was a threat to American democracy.

At a town hall meeting, Trump supporters said the thwarted attack made them support him even more.

“I believe they want to kill Trump so he can’t try for a second term,” said retired auto worker Donald Owen, 71.
