US ended the flexibility in the immigrant visa process, mandating state interviews at home starting November

The United States has introduced new restrictions on the immigrament visa process, eliminating options for applicants to choose the location of their choice of interview.

According to the US Department of State (DOS), effective November 1, 2025, “All Immigrant Visa applicants must attend their interviews in the Consular District where they live or, if asked, in their national country.”

Previously, applicants could decide where to appear for their visa interviews, the flexibility that helps many families and workers navigate the long waiting time and the difficulty of the trip. The option will no longer be under new policy.

DOS explains the changes in the rules as part of Trump’s broader administrative efforts to tighten immigration regulations and increase supervision. This policy will apply to all categories of immigrant visas, including family and work -based visas, as well as diversity visa lottery winners.

Officials note that “rare exceptions” can be considered in a state of humanitarian or medical emergency, although there are no clear guidelines provided. For applicants from countries where the Embassy is closed or the visa service remains suspended, DOS has appointed an alternative location to be processed.

This shift is expected to create new challenges for families and entrepreneurs. Legal experts warn that applicants can face longer waiting times, higher travel costs, and more complex documentation requirements. The American business that sponsors immigrant workers can also experience interference, with additional costs if employees are forced to travel to a third country for interviews.

However, Dos has underestimated fear of widespread disorders. “Most applicants will not have their interviews being canceled or moved,” said the department, although immigration lawyers advised their families and companies to prepare earlier to avoid setbacks.
