The United States has imposed visa restrictions targeting Rwandan officials accused of sponsoring M23 rebels and undermining peace in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The State Department, in a statement on Saturday, said visa restrictions had been imposed on several senior Rwandan officials for “fueling instability” in eastern DRC.
“By continuing to support M23 and violating the Washington Agreement, these individuals are encouraging violence and undermining the stability of the entire Great Lakes Region.
“The United States expects all parties to the Washington Agreement to fully implement their commitments.

This includes the immediate neutralization of the FDLR armed group by Congo and its associated groups, as well as by Rwanda withdrawing its troops and military equipment from Congo.
“Only in this way will the enormous economic potential of the Great Lakes region be realized.
“Individuals believed to be responsible, complicit, or directly or indirectly involved in undermining or impeding sustainable peace in the Great Lakes region will face the consequences,” the statement said.
America’s visa restriction policy gives the Secretary of State the authority to bar entry to America by foreigners “who have the potential to have a serious adverse impact on American foreign policy.”
Certain family members may also be covered by these restrictions. (NAN)
