The United States government stated that Nigeria’s minimum wages Nigeria was unable to raise millions of citizens of the country by poverty.
In its 2024 national relations on human rights practices, issued on August 12, 2025, the United States Department of State stated that the minimum wage, currently evaluated at $ 47.90 per month, had been seriously eroded by the devaluation of the Naira.
The report also observed that the application of wages remained weak throughout the country.
“The law provided for a minimum national wage for employers of the public and private sector with 25 or more full-time employees, with exceptions for seasonal agricultural workers, part-time workers, those in the Commission and some others”, reads the report.
“The National Minimo Wage (EMENDM) ACT 2024 doubled the minimum wage at 70,000 Naira ($ 47.90) per month. Despite the increase, the devaluation of the currency meant that the minimum wage was no longer higher than the level of income of poverty.
“Many employers had less than 25 employees, so most of the workers were not covered. Some states refused to implement the minimum wages law, citing financial constraints. [TheCable]
