We are happy to have our grassroots players participating in the World Table Tennis Contender, said Governor Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed its satisfaction with the participation of grassroots players in the first World Table Tennis Series in Sub-Saharan Africa held in Lagos.

He made the remarks at the medal presentation of the historic five-day event held at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

The world tournament brought together the world’s best players in intense competition for the coveted prizes and 400 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) ranking points for the winners.

Governor Sanwo-Olu revealed that sports are here to stay in Lagos as the World Table Tennis Federation has identified the state as one of the cities that promote table tennis.

β€œOver the last three days we have seen table tennis played at the highest level you can imagine. We are happy that there are a few young grassroots players from Nigeria who have come through this competition. I wish them all the best.”

And most importantly, I am proud of the public and the fans who have come here over the last three days and I see that the organisation has been spectacular. I am happy with the atmosphere I am seeing here.”

As a state committed to sports development, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the WTT Contender will also boost other sports to bring the best players in the world to Lagos and rekindle all the old glories in sports, but not just in football but across all disciplines.

Sanwo-Olu also reiterated that the state is working assiduously on the renovation of sports facilities across the state, adding that the introduction of sports in school is another form of engagement for school children to participate in school-level competitions.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho; Director General of Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu; ITTF Vice President, Enitan Wahid Oshodi; ITTF-AFRICA Director of Events and Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Kweku Tandoh were present at the WTT Contender Lagos Grand Final.
