We are working round the clock to recover and reinvest looted funds in national development, says EFCC chairman

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has said that the anti-corruption agency is working round the clock to recover stolen funds invested in businesses around the world by Nigerians and reinvest them into the domestic economy for national development.

Olukoyede made the promise on Wednesday when the Chairman/CEO of the Commission for Nigerians in the Diaspora (NiDCOM), Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa and his team paid him a courtesy visit at the EFCC Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday

The EFCC chief, responding to Dabiri-Erewa’s remarks, expressed his appreciation for the efforts of NiDCOM and highlighted with concern the challenges faced by some Nigerians abroad, especially the stigma associated with Nigerian passport holders, saying the work of NiDCOM is gradually changing the narrative.

Olukoyede revealed that many of the hidden and stolen funds from Nigeria have been invested in businesses across the world, adding that the Commission is working tirelessly to recover such funds and reinvest them in the country’s economy for national development.

The EFCC chief assured the Commission of his readiness to continue to collaborate with it in its activities and programmes aimed at renewing the bad image that some wicked citizens have created of Nigeria.

He underlined the shared mandate of both Commissions to encourage Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, to be exemplary ambassadors for their country.

He noted that: “The path to greatness is filled with hard work and dedication.”

Earlier, the EFCC chief had commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its pivotal role in resolving numerous fraud cases involving Nigerians abroad.

Dabiri-Erewa noted that the mere mention of the EFCC’s name has been effective in deterring fraudulent activities, thereby safeguarding the image of Nigerians in the diaspora.

He held discussions with the EFCC boss, which focused on critical issues affecting Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly remittances and the overall image of the nation abroad.

During the visit, Dabiri-Erewa expressed his gratitude to the EFCC and its management for the prompt and effective resolution of the cases reported by NiDCOM.

He listed some of the challenges faced by NiDCOM, highlighting the pressing problem of office space, and sought the assistance of the EFCC in addressing the issue.

The NiDCOM Chairman also outlined several key initiatives undertaken by the Commission, including the National Diaspora Policy, Diaspora Data Mapping, Diaspora Lecture Series, Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit (NDIS), diasporan medical missions, returnee intervention programmes and the Badagry Door of Return, among others.

These initiatives, he stressed, are essential to strengthen ties between Nigeria and its diaspora community.
