Captain of the Super Falcons, Rasheedat Ajibade has declared that the team is excited and ready to fight for glory at Wafcon 2024.
This follows a 2-0 victory over Cameroon on Tuesday where Ajibade, who scored both goals in the friendly against the indomitable lions at the Mko Abiola stadium.
He expressed the resolution of the team to stay focused despite the recent distractions and the limited time of preparation.
“At this time, the mood is positive. Although there are round -trip distractions, we understand the responsibilities that are coming,” Ajibade said at a press conference after the party.
“As players, it is an honor to play for the nation. We are positive, we are excited and we are anxious for the tournament. Of course, we will give our best as always.”
The shock on Tuesday was the return of the Falcons to the action after almost seven months apart, having lost the last two international FIFA windows.
The last time they played was a narrow 2-1 defeat against France in November 2024. Before that, Nigeria faced Algeria in a two-legged friendly series in Lagos and Ikenne.
Despite the long dismissal, the Super Falcons showed no signs of oxide. Ajibade, who recently concluded his spell at AtlΓ©tico Madrid female, opened the scoring in the first half before duplicating the leadership with a compound ending in the second.
Group B expects: Nigeria to face Tunisia, Algeria and Botswana
The 11 times African champions have taken to group B for WAFCON 2024, where they will face family enemies Tunisia and Algeria, along with Botswana.
The tournament is expected to begin on July 5 and extend until July 26, be fiercely competitive.
Nigeria’s offer for a tenth Wafcon title that extends record will also serve as a personal milestone for Ajibade, who is currently a free agent.
After four years highlighted with AtlΓ©tico, where he scored 40 goals in 139 appearances and won the Spanish 2021 Super Cup and the 2023 Queen Cup, the 24 -year -old eaves will be expected to take a transfer to a new European club after the tournament.
Madugu: “We are a job in progress”
The interim coach Justin Madugu praised the spirit and resistance of his team in what he described as a typically hard encounter with the Cameroonians.
Madugu also admitted that the lack of recent competitive action of the team meant that the game served as a moral reinforcement and a tactical evaluation ahead of Wafcon.
