The National President of the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (Jusun), Marwan Adamu, on Monday, said that all the organs of the Union would meet to review and undertake the necessary actions following the ongoing strike feedback.
Adamu declared him in an interview with the Nigeria news agency (Nan) while reacting to the news that the workers of the Supreme Court and the National Judial Council (NJC) had pulled out of the industrial action declared by the national body.
Nan reports that Jusun’s National Corps had, on May 30 in a circular from his national acting secretary, MJ Akwashiki, asked all the presidents of his chapters to be in force from midnight on Sunday 1 June, directing all their members to stay at home.
He said that the directive followed unsuccessful meetings in the application of the Minister of Labor and Remarking that was conciliatory on their issue.
“We believe that, as indicated by the organs of the Union, of the National Working Committee (NWC) and the National Executive Council (NEC) of our great union, the action will continue to further notice.
“Our requests are that the government pays us for five months, implement the National Minimum Salario N70.000, as well as the increase in the salary of 25/35 percent,” Jusun said.
However, when Nan visited the Supreme Court on Monday, the commercial activities were without obstacles and the courts were also sitting.
In addition, at the NJC, the office was not closed following the industrial action.
Reacting, Adamu said there was no division in the Jusun guide.
On the why the workers of the Supreme Court and the NJC refused to join the strike, Adamu said: “There are leaders of the Jusun chapter to the Supreme Court, you should have asked them.
“I am in the position to tell you because they are not respecting.
“We agreed to make a strike. It is not an individual question; it is a decision of the organ.
“If one of the organs does not comply, it is their duty to tell you because they are not respecting.”
According to him, it is not a division problem.
The president recalled that the state workers were not part of the industrial action in progress because their requests did not influence.
“Because we are on strike is because the implementation of the premium for salary and minimum wage has not been made.
“We have given approval to the chapters to proceed on strike as required.
“So, if a chapter has decided to retire, it is let them say it because those who say that they must demonstrate.
“The burden of why they are not joining is on them and not on me.
“As for the national body, they came with the problems, we looked at it, we followed all the processes due.
“We gave 21 days in the ultimatum, it expired. We gave 14 days, it expired. We gave seven days, it expired.
“And they sought approval to proceed on strike.
“Collectively, on a document they signed and we have given them.
“So, if they decided to go out today, it is to say why they got out,” he said.
Adamu, therefore, said that all the organs of the Union would meet to review the level of conformity.
“Are you a member of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (Nuj) I Crees and Nuj has its organs; has a process?
“Then cross the bridge when you reach the river.
“We started today, there is a feedback from what had happened.
“So it is time that the organs meet, see and take the necessary step and not for me to say what I will do because it is not an individual problem.
“It’s a decision of an organ,” he said.
He said he couldn’t say how long the strike would last.
“Currently while I’m talking to you, a meeting is now taking place at the request of Chief Justice of Nigeria.
“And if the meeting is not combined, there will be another meeting with other interested parties of the Ministry of Labor and Productivity.
“If the requests are satisfied, they will be resolved but I can’t tell you when the strike is canceled,” he said.
Nan reports that the Supreme Court in a press release issued at the end of his meeting stated that workers came to the conclusion that they did not join the industrial action, after evaluating the issues and efforts of the CJN to satisfy their requests. The press release confirmed that the CJN had already visited the presidency and had already submitted their requests in order to fully operate them.
The press release signed by 12 main officers of the Chapter of the Supreme Court of Jusun led by the President, Danladi NDA, said that the adhesion to the strike of June 2 will be equivalent to a wrong training of priority and abandonment and entail the exercise of futility,
“With CJN’s commendable effort, we owe you our unshakable support in order to obtain the expected allowances and others paid.
“The position of the lower sister courts in the required national strike cannot be managed by us in the Supreme Court as it will in vain for the efforts of the CJN in vain, at risk and swept under the carpet.
“We pray that our colleagues are calm and allow the efforts of the CJN to obtain significant results”, the press release read in part. (Nan)
