The Modern Traditional Medicine Practitioners of Nigeria (MTMPN ), an umbrella body under the Federal Ministry of Health has warned the general public against patronizing unregistered practitioners across Africa and Nigeria.
The organisation also warned against consuming herbs that could be detrimental to their health, especially at the time when kidney failure and liver damage is prevalent.
This was contained in a statement signed by it’s National President, Dr. Ibrahim Dada Nakowa and made available to newsmen in Abuja.
According to Dr. Ibrahim Dada Nakowa, who is also the Ambassador and National Coordinator of the Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (TCAM ), a department under the Federal Ministry of Health, this is not the time for the public to patronize anybody who professes to be a herbal doctor without first verifying if such an individual is a registered practitioner.
“Our Association is a registered body under the Federal Ministry of Health. We are trained as traditional medicine practitioners. We don’t just administer herbs to our patients without first authenticating the side effects of such herbs.
“There are herbs that are very dangerous to human consumption. Herbal medicine can cause kidney failure and liver damage in some consumers because they contain toxic chemicals or heavy metals which can react harmfully with other drugs. This is why as a recognized body we are warning the public to desist from patronizing fake herbal doctors” He added.
Dr. Ibrahim Dada Nakowa who is also the King of Traditional Medicine in the entire African continent assured the public that traditional medicine has the efficacy to treat all manner of diseases which orthodox medicine can not treat if they are administered by registered and qualified herbal practitioners.
Dr. Ibrahim Dada Nakowa therefore appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to accent to the Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine bill which was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in 2020.
The bill seeks to encourage the practice of alternative medicine in Nigeria.
