Wike illuminates Abuja with anit-vandalism street lamps

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Nyesom Wike, reported the installation of the street lamps in Abuja, stating that the project is aimed at reducing crime in the city.

The minister observed that the absence of lamppost made Abuja vulnerable to insecurity, with almost 80% of the city in darkness.

“So it was a sense of concern for me and my team. But we heard that we have to face the challenge. When we got on board of August 2023, something that anyone visits Abuja or that resides in Abuja will identify is that almost 80% of the entire city is in darkness”.

“Secondly, there was this problem of insecurity when we got on board. So we are trying to see how to deal with this problem. If we continue to leave Abuja in darkness, obviously insecurity will increase. So we decided to do what we can and what was available.”

To deal with vandalism and sabotage, the minister revealed that the new street lamps will be equipped with surveillance characteristics, allowing the authorities to identify and arrest anyone who tries to damage or steal the lights.

“Un altro sabotaggio verrà dai criminali. I criminali non crederanno che sarà difficile per loro andare e rubare i cavi, sarà difficile per loro vandalizzare i polacchi perché ora ci saranno caratteristiche di sicurezza. Sapranno che non saranno più facili e non saranno più facili da fare per le compagnie per essere protetti per essere protetti per essere protetti per essere protetti per essere più proiettati per essere protetti per essere protetti per essere protetti per essere protetti per essere protetti per essere protected not to be projected.

“Another area of attack will be those who normally acquire these poles. When they vandalize them, they go to sell them to resell. They will no longer be business as usual. So you will also see the attack from that area.

“One thing that attracted me was the fact that they will put the surveillance characteristics so that if you go and try to vandalizing it or trying to steal it, they will be able to identify it. And so that problem, I was happy that that area had been solved,” he said.

He revealed that the companies responsible for the installation will keep the street lamps for 4-5 years, eliminating the need for frequent maintenance.

He observed that the project should create job opportunities for young people in the area and well -enlightened roads will dissuade criminals and improve general safety in Abuja

Wike expressed his determination to complete the project despite the potential challenges, including sabotage of various groups.

He assured that the FCT administration will work closely with the security agencies to protect the project and make the authors to justice.

“Let me assure everyone that our security agencies will work in synergy with companies to make sure this project is protected,” he said.
