Young Benin City baseball star Fehintola Esther determined to raise Nigerian flag in world baseball

At just 20 years old, Fehintola Esther, a promising baseball player from Benin City, is making her way in one of Nigeria’s lesser-known sports. With passion, discipline and determination, the young athlete is focused on building a name for herself while shedding light on the growing presence of baseball in the country.

Esther discovered her love for the sport in 2019 at a grassroots training camp organized by Edo State. Baseball Association. What started as curiosity soon turned into an unwavering commitment to the game.

I fell in love with baseball the first time I played,” he recalled. “It’s a game that challenges both the mind and the body.

Esther, who currently trains at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, continues to hone her skills despite the limited facilities and support available for baseball in Nigeria.

“It’s not easy,” he admitted. “Baseball doesn’t get as much attention as football, but that won’t stop me. I think hard work always pays off.”

Like many athletes in emerging sports, visibility remains a major obstacle. Esther believes that more media coverage and sponsorship would help players like her gain recognition and inspire wider participation.

“There are so many talented players in our communities that are not seen,” he explained. “If we get more coverage and opportunities, Nigerian baseball will advance.”

To increase her exposure, Esther has taken to social media to share her training routines and connect with coaches and scouts around the world.

“I post my training clips online,” he said. “It’s a way for people to see what I can do; you never know who might be watching.”

Despite the challenges, Esther remains optimistic about the future of baseball in Nigeria. Her ultimate dream is to represent the nation internationally and inspire more young people, especially girls, to play this sport.

“I think baseball has a place here,” he concluded. “With the right support, Nigeria can compete with the best in the world.
