The federal minister of the Capital territory, Nyesom Wike, expressed regret for the failure of the presidents of the Area Council to pay the minimum wage of the Council workers.
Wike said he had summoned the presidents to an urgent meeting, following the mass protest by the teachers of primary schools and the operators of the Area Council, as well as health workers for the non -implementation of the minimum salary and other rights.
The minister declared this while addressed to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, during a routine inspection of some key road projects scheduled for the inauguration in May 2025, as part of the second anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Wike described the protest by the teachers and workers of the Council as unfortunate, stating that the presidents of the Area Council did not pay the teachers despite his approval.
The minister also expressed dismay for the non -payment of the rights of primary school teachers who are responsible for the education of young children, underlining that primary schools are part of the area councils.
As he evoked the presidents at a meeting, the minister appealed to the union of Nigerian teachers (nuts) to exercise patience while the issues were resolved.
He said: “It is a shame and we must tell us the simple truth. The presidents of the council of the area, after approving the money to be sent to them to be able to pay the teachers, were unable to do it. In fact, I received the report yesterday (Wednesday) and I was able to convene all of them.
โI don’t know why people are not aware that these are teachers who take care of our children and you are happy that you are not paying them their salaries.
โThese are teachers of primary schools, non -teachers of secondary schools. It is responsibility for advice; they are responsible for primary schools.
“So, I summoned them to a meeting and I continue to appeal to nuts to give them some time that these things will be resolved.”
By providing updates on various inspected road projects, including the service roadway on the left Osex, the interchange N20 (Wole Soyinka Way) and the complete development of the N5 arterial road from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III, the minister expressed satisfaction with the quality of work and reiterated the commitment of the FCT administration to ensure timely completion.
“In general, we are happy with the quality of the work done by all contractors. We, on our part, do everything possible to keep in our obligation so that they do not find excuses for which they are unable to fulfill their obligation,” said the minister.
Wike, while answering the application on the costs of the project, said that the financial details would be provided during an report of the management.
However, he revealed the violation of about N10 billion by the National Assembly for the five -way project expressing the trust that the funds will be used effectively before the 2024 budget expires.
The minister also stated that the projects align with the renewed agenda of hope and are advantageous for residents. He said: “I think we are happy that it will be part of the anniversary for the president. In fact, the renewed agenda of hope is working and people are happy with what they are seeing”.
