A group of young people in the NKPOLU community, Obio/Akport Area of ​​the Rivers Regional Government on Sunday attack and rob a police officer in the community.

A viral video shows a group of young men who physically attack Inspector Joshua Nyian after accusing him of taking prohibited substances in their community.

Spokesperson for the State Police Command, Grace Ayirge-Koko, confirmed the incident to journalists on Tuesday.

He said the officer, who was attached to the Woji Division, returned from his duties when the President of NKPOLU Youth, the head of the community, and about 20 other young men watching him.

“Police officers returned from their duties and had stopped visiting a woman who was reportedly pregnant with her when the incident occurred.

“The young people reportedly beat him, dragged him to the main road, and confiscated the identity card of the police and his cellphone.

“The mass further recorded it in the video and forcibly collecting N78,000 from him.

“In his report, Insp. Nyian accused the attack may be driven by personal complaints. He accused that the previous youth president had made progress against his girlfriend.

“After the report, the officers’ statement was recorded voluntarily, and the medical form was issued for treatment.

“Efforts are ongoing to identify and bring those responsible for the attack to be asked and investigated.

“The order urged community leaders to warn their young people not to take the law into their own hands, because the order remains committed to ensuring justice and maintaining public order,” the spokesman added.
