Zirkzee called up to the Netherlands national team for the Euro Cup

Joshua Zirkzee has been called up to the Netherlands squad for EURO 2024 after Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners withdrew through injury.

Initially, coach Ronald Koeman had left Zirkzee out for the tournament that begins on Friday in Germany.

They have had plenty of injury problems with Ajax striker Brian Brobbey also struggling to be fit for the opener.

Atalanta midfielder Koopmeiners had to withdraw due to a muscle injury, as did his teammate Marten de Roon.

According to Football Italia, Koeman has brought Zirkzee into the team as a replacement for the Koopmeiners, even though they play fundamentally very different roles.

The 23-year-old has not played a single international match for the Netherlands, but scored seven goals in 19 international matches for the under-21 team.

Zirkzee scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in 37 competitive games for Bologna this season and is in negotiations with Milan, as well as being of interest to Juventus, Arsenal and Manchester United.

The Netherlands is in a group with France, Poland and Austria.
