1 of Kano d!es’ quintuplets, 4 others in intensive care

One of the quintuplets born at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital has died, while the remaining four babies are currently receiving intensive medical care.

The Kano State Hospital (HMB) board of directors confirmed the development in a clinical update released on Sunday, saying the five babies were born prematurely and admitted to the hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) due to very low birth weight and other complications.

According to the statement signed by the Council’s public relations manager, Samira Suleiman, the newborns were immediately placed in intensive care after giving birth.

This included incubator care, intravenous fluids, and antibiotic therapy, which were subsequently adjusted based on medical assessments.

The Commission announced that Baby 1, a 1.3 kilogram female, died after receiving a blood transfusion following complications related to apnea.

The four surviving children remain under close monitoring. Child 2, a 1.3 kilogram male, also received a blood transfusion and is under observation. The third child, a 1.2 kilogram male, is stable in intensive care. Child 4, also male and weighing 1.2 kilograms, received a transfusion and continues to receive specialist care, while Child 5, a female weighing 1.0 kilograms, remains under observation in the SCBU.

The HMB noted that all children experienced episodes of hypoglycaemia, which were promptly managed. Feeding was introduced using breast milk substitutes, with infants tolerating measured amounts.

Newborns also undergo phototherapy to treat neonatal jaundice, a condition commonly seen in premature babies.

Under the leadership of Mansur Mudi Nagoda, the Council said all necessary medical interventions were carried out promptly from delivery to hospitalization and ongoing treatment.

The Council emphasized that preterm preterm births are medically complex and carry significant risks despite the best medical efforts.

He praised the facility’s healthcare workers for their dedication and assured the public of his continued commitment to quality healthcare, calling for support from the medical team caring for the surviving children.
