At least 11 people were killed and eight others injured in a car accident along the Port Harcourt-Enugu Expressway in Abia State on Wednesday.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in the state, Mrs. Ngozi Ezeoma, confirmed the accident in a statement on Wednesday in Umuahia.
He said the accident occurred at the Arongwa Village axis on the highway opposite Arab Contractors Construction Company at about 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday.
FRSC officials added that initial investigations revealed that the accident was caused by excessive speed.
According to him, a Nissan Caravan commercial bus and a HOWO commercial truck were involved in the accident.
Ezeoma said: “The bus carrying 19 people – eight men and 11 women – to Enugu hit the truck.
“A joint rescue team from FRSC RS 9.31 Aba and Command Unit RS 9.32 km78 Aba arrived at the accident scene within five minutes of notification to carry out rescue operations.
“At the time of the accident, 10 people – five men and five women were injured while nine people (four men and five women) died on the spot.
“The injured victims were taken to Ronald Hospital, Umuikaa, and Living Word Hospital, Aba, while the deceased victims were taken to Alanwemadu and Peace Mortuary, Aba.
“During the hospital follow-up of the accident victims, it was discovered that a man and a woman died this evening, while one of the victims was referred to the Federal Medical Center Umuahia.
“With this latest incident, a total of 11 people (five men and six women) are confirmed dead, and eight people (four men and four women) are confirmed injured.”
