So far no less than 120 million Nigerians have been enrolled in the database of the National Identity number (Nin), the general manager of the National Identity Management Commission (Nimc), Abisoye Coker-Audate, revealed on Wednesday in Abuja.
Speaking in a conference in the media, Mrs. Coker-Orusote said that the exercise of registration in Nin remains ongoing through urban and rural areas, with an aggressive push to expand the scope before the end of the year.
“We have enrolled many Nigerians and we are still counting. We will certainly continue until we catch Nigerian more than the end of the year,” he said.
According to the head of the Nimc, the partnership of the Agency with the World Bank as part of the Nigeria identification project for development (ID4D) has increased the involvement of the private sector through a regime known as “Frontier Partners”. This initiative allows private actors to work alongside Nimc officials in the capture of data across the country.
He also observed that the Commission had equipped the state offices and the local government with updated and personal structures trained to relieve the registration process.
“We have well trained Nimc staff ready to help candidates to modify or update their information. The price framework has also been revised, with some adequate prices downwards, others upwards and some completely removed,” he added.
To improve efficiency, Coker-Audate Mrs. said that the Commission has introduced a self-service modification platform that allows the Nigerians to update their online records using biometric authentication. This aims to facilitate the burden of transfer or updates of records relating to work.
βIn today’s Nigeria, people often move between states. With the online self -axis platform, they no longer need to queue in the centers.
They can access, authenticate with their biometry and update their records as they adhere to computer security and data protection protocols, “he explained.
The DG has also highlighted the role of the Nimc Nin Authentication app, which integrates with the Commission’s backnd systems and offers greater protection for personal data.
On access to government services, he revealed that the student loan system just introduced would require registration to the candidates in the Nin database.
This, he said, promotes financial inclusion and helps to eliminate identity fraud.
“Everything that a student has to do is enter his name on the loan portal and a verified identity is displayed by a single safe database. This simplifies the process and guarantees transparency,” he said.
Mr. Coker-Adopte added that the Commission had taken measures to reduce corruption and extortion within the registration system up to 40 % through ongoing reforms and partnerships with IT security experts.
He assured that the continuous training and the redevelopment of Nimc staff were underway to maintain the service of providing the service at national level.
