Federal Capital Region Minister (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has explained why he chose not to support the presidential candidate of the Labor Party, Peter Obi, in the 2023 general election.
Speaking during the press briefing on Friday in Abuja, Wike rejected Obi’s chances to win the presidency, describing it as a “social media candidate” who did not have the political structure of the grassroots needed for the election victory in Nigeria.
“No, he has no chance to win the election,” Wike said firmly. “I don’t go to where you see people like this kind of social media candidate. I don’t do social media candidates.”

The Governor of the former Rivers State emphasized that the success of the election in Nigeria was not merely determined by the popularity or competency that was felt, but by the rooted political network and strategic alliances that resonated with voters outside the digital platform.
Wike’s comments reflect the ongoing tension and ideological differences in the Nigerian political landscape, especially after general elections that saw an increase in youth and online activism. Many view Obi’s nomination as a significant change towards a younger political movement and is oriented to reform, but critics such as Wike argue that digital popularity cannot replace the political reality of election.
Wike’s statement can restore the conversation about the role of social media that developed in democracy and the election of Nigeria in this country, as well as whether the traditional political structure remains the most effective way of power.
