A former secretary of the government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, said that several governors and high -level members of the All Progressive Congress sentence (APC) secretly align with an emerging opposition coalition in view of the general elections of 2027.
In a revealing interview with TVC News, Lawal – who officially downloaded the APC on June 29 – created these influential figures, although still publicly faithful to the party, they are secretly working to disturb the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
“Yes, there are members of the APC who work with the coalition and will speak for themselves. Some may not be daring like me, but many – including governors – are aligned privately with us,” said Lawal.
According to the former SGF, the internal rot inside the APC and the disenchantment with the Leadership style of Tinubu have pushed many insiders to look for political alternatives. He accused the party to suppress dissent and discouraging constructive criticisms.
“The APC has never been united. It is a party in which the advice is seen as an opposition. There is no internal democracy; members are victims of bullying in silence,” he said.
Lawal has also derived the recent wave of defections at the APC, describing them as acts of despair by politicians who try to guarantee their political survival, not authentic ideological changes.
“Governors are decamping for the APC because they know that the president has already blocked the 2027 ticket. There will be no primaries. They are just trying to remain pertinent. But people are not following them,” he said.
He pointed his fingers to the APC for presumably creating the political playbook to stay in one party while working for another, describing the former governor of the state of the rivers, Nyesom Wike, like the “Master of the model”.
He said: “I am learning this from APC: the same script Wike has improved and grown beyond imagination. Wike is our leader in this type of politics”.
On the growing coalition of opposition, Lawal clarified that it is not focused on a particular presidential hope, insisting on the fact that it is a collective effort to omit what has called a “non -performing” government.
“The coalition does not concern Atiku. I participated in the inclined meetings towards Obi, Atiku and Amaechi. Before starting, with everyone with political ambition it was told to block it in a wardrobe. A person alone cannot defeat a historical operator,” he said.
Lawal has also justified the need for a coalition, stating that the goal is to give birth to a government that serves the Nigerians better.
“Many of us were disappointed by the Tinubu leadership style or the way he allows others to manage his government. There is nothing wrong if we decide to meet to make a change,” he said.
Although refusing to appoint specific governors or leader of the APC involved in the opposition alliance, Lawal has argued that the disillusionment within the party to power is widespread and the influence of the coalition is growing silently but constantly.
His comments should shake the APC in power, in particular in a growing public discontent for economic difficulties and insecurity under the Tinubu administration.
The observations also underline the changing political alignments in view of a highly anticipated electoral competition from 2027.
