2027: The Chairperson of the NNPP Faction Rejects the Declaration of the Kwankwaso Alliance

The new National Factional Chair of the Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), Agbo Major, has stated that the 2023 party presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, did not have the authority to force any alliances on the party.

Major’s position followed the announcement of Kwankwaso at the Kawkwasiyya group meeting in Abuja on Thursday, where he stated that NNPP was open to the alliance ahead of the 2027 general election.

Reacting to a statement available to the media on Friday, Major described the meeting of the National Executive Council held by the Kwankwaso faction in Abuja as “null and void.” He stated that the resolution of the meeting could not rule out the existing party decisions or the assessment of the Federal Capital High Court regarding the NNPP leadership crisis.

“Beyond the betrayal of a clear trust, it is regrettable that Kwankwaso continues to use the name NNPP for negotiations and public comments that can trigger riots in the country,” said Major, quoting the criticism of the new Kankwaso -this new to the Federal government for alleged northern disability as a “classic example.”

He further revealed that NNPP was waiting for the response of the Independent National Election Commission (Inec) at his request to recognize the leadership structure resulting from the convention ordered by the court.

Major warned the political actors that any alliance that entered with Kwankwaso under the NNPP banner would “with its own risk,” emphasized that the party remained committed to internal democracy.

“Our party is open to all Nigerians and will provide the same opportunity for candidates through the compulsory preliminary selection. We will not allow the repetition of betrayal experienced in 2023. While NNPP does not oppose the alliance with your political parties if needed, the arrangement must not be encouraged by personal revenge,” he said.

He stated the hope that Inec would uphold the rule of law by recognizing the legal leadership of the party.
