40 was afraid of losing as a boss on barrels in Sokoto

The tragedy hit the state of Sokoto on Sunday after a boat that transported more than 50 passengers turned upside down on the road to the Goronyo market, leaving over 40 people.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the accident in a declaration, revealing that only about 10 passengers had been saved at the time of the press.

The general director of Nema, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, said that the agency immediately deployed her rescue team after receiving news of the accident.

He added that the research and rescue operations were underway in collaboration with local divers, rescuers and volunteers of the community.

“We are doing everything possible to identify disappeared people and provide urgent support to the families of the victims.

Our priority is to save human lives and ensure that affected families are not left without assistance, “said Umar.

According to reports, the unfortunate boat, according to what was reported, was heading towards the popular Goronyo market when it turned upside down halfway. Local sources said that most passengers were traders and inhabitants of the village traveling with goods for the weekly market.

The episodes of boat accidents are recurring in many river communities in Nigeria, often linked to poor regulation, overload and lack of safety measures. In the states of Sokoto and neighbors, these accidents have caused hundreds of lives in recent years.

NEMA has ensured the public that updates on rescue efforts would have been provided as progress of operations.

In the meantime, the residents have invited the authorities to impose more severe safety rules on waterways to avoid further tragedies.
