9,733 households affected by Cyclone Adamawa – NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said on Saturday at least 9,733 houses had been affected by this year’s windstorms in Adamawa State.

NEMA Head of Operations in Adamawa, Mr. Ladan Ayuba disclosed this to journalists on Saturday in Yola.

He said his agency had conducted assessments in Jada, Hong, Mayo-Belwa, Madagali and Fufore local government areas of the state.

Ayuba also appealed to residents living in flood-prone areas to immediately evacuate to a safer place or higher ground for the safety of all.

He said the warning followed a prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (Nimet) that Adamawa was among the states that would experience flooding in 2024.

NEMA officials said the areas likely to be affected are Fufore, Yola-North, Yola-South, Girei, Numan, Lamurde and Gombi LGAs.

He said: “For your safety, please avoid flood-prone areas, stay on high ground, and do not throw rubbish in waterways.”

He also advised residents to listen to the radio for relevant information and follow the agency’s instructions.

“You should also not drink or wash clothes with flood water to avoid a cholera outbreak.

“People should return home only when authorities say it is safe to do so, because we are experiencing flooding due to the overflow of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameron Republic,” Ayuba said.
