Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Friday asked individuals behind the #EndBadGovernance protests in the country to submit their details to the Police authorities.
Egbetokun, who spoke to journalists in Abuja, asked all groups planning to participate in the protest to provide their names and contact details to the commissioners of police in their respective states.
He said the action was taken to ensure the protests were peaceful.
A group of Nigerians have called for nationwide protests scheduled to begin on August 1 to express their discontent over the economic hardship and other problems plaguing the country.
The police chief said: “We recognise the constitutional rights of Nigerian citizens to assemble and demonstrate peacefully.
“However, in the interest of public safety and order, we appeal to all groups planning to hold a protest to provide necessary information to the Commissioner of Police in the state where the protest is planned to be held.
“To facilitate a successful and incident-free protest, they must provide the following information: state the proposed protest route and assembly point; the expected duration of the protest; and the names and contact details of protest leaders and organizers.
“We urge all protesters to cooperate with the police, abide by the law, and adhere to global best practices for peaceful assembly to ensure the safe and successful exercise of their rights.”
