Former local government chairmen in Rivers State on Friday faulted the continued assignment of interim committee chairmen for weeks after the Supreme Court declared them illegal in the council.
The Supreme Court earlier this month granted total autonomy to the country’s 774 local governments.
The apex court in its ruling on a suit filed by the Federal Government ordered the Federal Government to withhold revenue allocations from local councils not under the control of elected officials.
Addressing a press conference in Port Harcourt, the former council chairman slammed Governor Similaye Fubara’s support for the interim committee chairman to remain in office despite a Supreme Court ruling prohibiting such in the country.
They threatened to force their way into various councils and challenge the governor with force if the situation continued.
The former council chiefs are loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Former Emohua LGA chairman, Chidi Lloyd, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to order the arrest of the interim committee chairmen.
He said: “We are not cowards. If this continues, we will go back to the local government and force our way into the council. That is what we will do.
“We remain silent because our leaders continue to call for a peaceful path. We are not cowards.
“If this continues, we will worsen the already worsening situation. We are not cowards. We are asking the police to act quickly. The House of Representatives has written to the Inspector General of Police. We do not know why the police in Rivers are being slow and saying that everything has been done properly.”
