The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the ongoing dispute between the Dangote Oil Refinery and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
The investigation will also involve the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
Deputy House Speaker Philip Agbese stated this at a press conference on Saturday in Abuja.
He said the Green Chamber would not push for the removal of NNPCL Group Chief Executive Melee Kyari if the dispute between the Dangote Refinery and government agencies persisted.
The move follows reports of a fresh fuel crisis across the country and claims that Dangote Refinery fuel is of low quality.
Agbese said the investigation was in line with the House of Representatives’ commitment to protect all national assets and critical economic infrastructure such as the Dangote Refinery.
He said: βWe have seen a lot of de-marketing campaigns to discredit the Dangote Oil Refinery and given the negative impact, this has caused panic in the country.β
βThis uncertainty has led to fuel queues reappearing in some parts of the country.
βUnfortunately, what we have learned is that NNPC and NMDPRA played a major role in the plan to discredit this refinery, which is unacceptable.
βThe bigger aspect of our concern is the fear that a false narrative is being spread by vested interests who are determined to import dirty fuel into this country.
βAs a proactive institution committed to the welfare of the Nigerian nation and citizens, the position of the House of Representatives is to investigate the allegations.
“It is on record that the House of Representatives has ordered the President to dismiss NMDPRA. So the House of Representatives will also not hesitate to ask for the dismissal of Mr. Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive of NNPCL if necessary.”
He stressed that the DPR would demand Kyari’s dismissal if there was evidence of an attempt to destroy the Dangote Refinery.
Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas earlier led a House delegation on a visit to the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Company in Lagos.
The visit is part of ongoing efforts to support the country’s key industries.
Abbas said the visit provided valuable insights that would guide the DPR’s legislative actions and decisions.
