Security on high alert as Osun braces for potential protests

In a precautionary measure aimed at maintaining public order, security forces in Osun State on Wednesday, carried out a show of force.

The deployment of armed personnel from the police, army and other security agencies has raised suspicions and concerns about potential civil unrest.

A motorcade of soldiers, police, Civil Defense Corps and DSS members moved through major roads in Osogbo with full weaponry.

Speaking at the roadshow, the spokesman of the Osun Police command, SP Yemisi Opalola said the joint security forces were on a show of force in preparation for the August 1 demonstration to prevent criminal elements from hijacking the protest.

“Yes, the team is showing its strength across state capitals to send a warning to irresponsible elements who may want to infiltrate tomorrow’s protest to hijack it.

“We are sending a signal that there is no room for criminals to hijack the protests. The protests will be protected and other citizens will also be well protected,” he said.

While the official position is that the operation is a precaution against criminal elements who might exploit the planned protests, the heavy-handed approach has not been without its critics. Civil liberties advocates have raised concerns about potential human rights violations and the chilling effect the crackdown could have on freedom of expression.

The security build-up comes amid rising tensions in the country, with calls for protests over a range of socio-economic issues. The government’s decision to deploy security forces clearly shows deep concerns about the potential for large-scale demonstrations.
