Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State, graduated 1,008 students at its 18th convocation ceremony, producing its first 16 Doctor of Philosophy candidates since the establishment of the institution.

The ceremony, held on Saturday at the main auditorium of the university, also saw the investiture of Dr Rafiu Ebiti as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, along with the awarding of honorary doctorates to three eminent Nigerians.

Among those awarded were the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola; renowned jurist Prof. Yusuf Ali (SAN); and Dr. Lukman Bolaji, in recognition of their respective contributions.

The graduation of the university’s first 16 PhD students marked a significant milestone in its postgraduate academic development, with graduates coming from the Departments of Accounting, Biochemistry, Computer Science and Mass Communication.

Speaking at the event, the owner and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Prince Ma’ruf Ajibola (SAN), reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to its founding philosophy of offering the best in academic and moral education.

He said the university has continued to improve its infrastructure and facilities to meet global standards, while appreciating stakeholders for their constant support towards the growth of the institution.

Ajibola reiterated that Crescent University remained true to the vision of its founder, the late Prince Bola Ajibola (SAN), former Attorney General of the Federation and Judge of the International Court of Justice, of producing graduates with sound academic knowledge and strong moral values.

Founded in 2005, the private Islamic faith-based university has continued to position itself as an institution focused on academic excellence, character development and producing graduates capable of significantly contributing to national development.

The vice-rector, prof. Ibraheem Gbajabiamila, said the university is adapting to emerging technological trends and developments in digital education through investments in modern teaching, learning and research facilities.

He revealed that the institute has established a state-of-the-art knowledge laboratory, along with other facilities designed to strengthen academic offerings and enhance students’ learning experiences.

Gbajabiamila stressed that the university remained committed to combining academic excellence with character development in its various disciplines.

Giving a breakdown of the graduating students, the vice-chancellor said 897 students graduated, while the remaining graduates include graduates and diploma holders.

Of the university graduates, 99 obtained the First Class diploma, 439 obtained the Second Class Upper Division, while 289 finished with the Second Class Lower Division.

A further 64 students graduated with Third Class qualifications, while six achieved Pass qualifications.

At the postgraduate level, 79 students earned master’s degrees, six completed master’s programs in business administration, seven earned master’s degrees in arts, while three earned postgraduate diplomas.

The Vice Chancellor said that the 16 doctoral students represent the first doctoral students from the four departments of the institute.

Meanwhile, Ashimi Adedamola of the Department of Mass Communication has emerged as the best overall graduate student for the 2026 academic session.

The invitation also included the awarding of diplomas, certificates, prizes and other academic recognitions to deserving students.

The event attracted traditionalist dignitaries, parents, members of the university community and representatives of nearby universities, polytechnics and educational institutes among others.

The ceremony highlighted the university’s efforts to expand its academic profile, strengthen graduate education and sustain its emphasis on producing graduates equipped with both intellectual competence and moral discipline.
