Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, has decried the economic losses incurred as a result of the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests in the country.
However, he noted that the loss of human life in the protests was far greater than the material damage.
The minister, who was speaking at the 2024 Africa Caucus meeting in Abuja on Sunday, acknowledged that government measures aimed at transforming the economy may have short-term costs, but were necessary to address decades of underinvestment in critical sectors.
He noted that while some may disagree with the government’s approach, the administration is working to address accumulated problems in security, infrastructure, human resources, education and health.

Bagudu said: “You can’t even estimate how many people have died. How can you count it?”
He warned that even well-intentioned actions can be hijacked by those with evil intentions, resulting in losses and social disruption.
“I don’t have an estimate of the losses, but one life lost is quite a big loss.
“The government is taking steps that it believes will lead to a better future.
“But sometimes those measures have short-term consequences, and it’s understandable that some segments of society feel that maybe we should have done things differently, or that this has taken too long and we’ve listened, we’ve paid attention,” he added.
