DPR blames bureaucracy for failure of 50% salary cut

Members of parliament have yet to implement their resolution to cut their salaries by 50 percent for the next six months.

Keep in mind that federal lawmakers passed the resolution on July 18 and it is expected to be reflected in their paychecks for July.

However, DPR spokesman Rotimi Akin, in a statement, blamed bureaucracy for the delay in implementation.

Akin said: “The House of Representatives remains committed to the resolution passed on July 18, which mandates a 50 percent reduction in the salaries of honorable members for the period July to December 2024.

“We acknowledge and regret that this resolution was not implemented by the bureaucracy as intended in July.”

Lawmakers made the pledge while deliberating on a proposal that seeks to avert nationwide hunger protests that began on August 1.

At a plenary session chaired by House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy House Speaker Benjamin Kalu amended the motion by appealing to his colleagues to sacrifice 50 percent of their salaries to support the government’s intervention efforts to address the situation.

Kalu said: “This government has tried its best, but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I would like to appeal to my colleagues to sacrifice 50 percent for a period of six months.

“Our salary is IDR 600,000 per month. I want to request that we give up 50 percent of our salary for six months.

“With each member paying N300,000 into the common treasury, the legislative assembly will contribute N108 million every month to the Federal Government and N648 million for six months.”

The proposal was welcomed by all parties and was passed into a resolution.
