Soldiers attached to Operation Safe Haven at Tafawa Balewa unit in Bauchi State have shot dead a young man identified as Habibu Aminu in the state.
Four others were seriously injured in the incident in Lere village in Tafawa Balewa local government area on Tuesday.
State police spokesman Ahmed Wakili confirmed the incident to journalists on Wednesday in Bauchi.
He said: “Today, August 7, 2024, a number of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Lere Village in Tafawa Balewa LGA in 3 Sharon vehicles set out to campaign in Lere District in preparation for the local government elections to be held on August 17, 2024.
“On their way back, they had to pass through a checkpoint set up by Operation Safe Heaven personnel based in Tafawa Balewa. They were stopped at the checkpoint but refused to stop and drove to Lere.
“However, the troops went and arrested one of the drivers at his house in Lere. As a result, the people became more aggressive and returned to the checkpoint to release the arrested driver. The troops retreated and opened fire on the people.
“As a result, one Habibu Aminu, Babawo, Nawawu, Abdulrashid, Ahmed Yashim and Yakubu Bello, all residents of Tafawa Balewa sustained varying degrees of injuries. Habibu Aminu later died in hospital while the others are still undergoing treatment.”
