Former Gov. Shekarau urges Tinubu to re-evaluate policies amid economic crisis, protests

Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has called on the Bola Tinubu-led administration to reassess its economic policies and acknowledge the mistakes made since taking office.

He said this in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Friday night.

Shekarau’s comments come as Nigeria grapples with the impact of the policy of removing subsidies and floating the naira, which has led to a sharp decline in the value of the naira, causing economic hardship across the country, and sparking widespread protests.

The former governor stressed the importance of self-reflection, stating, “The best learning is when you learn from your mistakes.” He urged the government to identify areas of error, including policy mistakes and misrepresentations, that contributed to the current economic crisis.

Since President Tinubu’s inauguration in May 2023, petrol prices have tripled, driving inflation higher. The National Bureau of Statistics reported an inflation rate of 34% in June 2024, making basic necessities unaffordable for millions.

Shekarau stressed the need for the government to admit its mistakes, saying, “It is time to sit down and address them.” His comments reflect growing concerns among Nigerians about the government’s handling of the economy.
