Nigerian writer and director Onyeka Nwelue has been shortlisted for the 2026 ANA/King Dakolo Prize for Fiction with his latest novel, Murder in Orania, placing him among three writers vying for one of the Nigerian Authors’ Association’s top fiction awards.
Murder in Orania by Nwelue is shortlisted alongside In Our Own Ways by Yejide Kilanko and Cursed Daughters by Onyikan Braithwaite in the fiction category.
The shortlist adds another literary accolade to a career in which Nwelue has moved between fiction, nonfiction, film, and literary studies, while developing a body of work characterized by its engagement with questions of identity, violence, history, and society.
Published in 2026 by South Africa-based Bayan Street Books, Murder in Orania is a 180-page novel that centers on Zuko Mbeki, a young Xhosa man whose life changes after the acquittal of the men accused of killing his sister-in-law, Nomsa Dlamini, and a Zimbabwean woman, Rufaro Moyo.
The acquittal becomes the catalyst for Zuko’s decision to infiltrate Orania, a controversial Afrikaner settlement in South Africa, disguised as a construction worker. His goal is to find those he holds responsible and exact his own form of justice.
The novel therefore begins as a story of murder but quickly opens into a broader exploration of justice, race, nationalism, exclusion, and the consequences of a society in which people can convince themselves that some individuals are beyond the reach of the law.
An extract published by TimesLIVE describes Zuko’s response to the acquittal as he watches the news in a shebeen in Upington. Instead of accepting the verdict as another inevitable event, he is determined to challenge the sense of impunity surrounding the case.
A recent review of the novel published on South Africa’s LitNet similarly identifies corruption, prejudice, racism, abuse of power and institutional failure among the issues explored by Nwelue. The review describes Zuko’s journey not simply as an exercise in revenge, but as an attempt to challenge the assumption that some people are untouchable and that wrongdoing must necessarily remain without consequences.
The setting is significant. Orania, with its history and identity as a predominantly Afrikaner community, offers Nwelue a tightly controlled geographical and symbolic space in which to examine questions of belonging and exclusion. Zuko, an outsider to that world, must enter it in disguise to pursue the people he believes are responsible for the deaths.
South African broadcaster SABC News described the novel as a crime story that goes beyond its mystery plot to address issues of justice, race, grief, identity and South Africa’s unresolved history.
For Nwelue, the shortlist also adds to an already impressive record of literary recognition. His previous crime novel, The Strangers of Braamfontein, won the 2021 Crime Fiction Lovers Award and the ANA Prize for Prose Fiction.
Nwelue is also a filmmaker and has published more than 40 books. His film work includes The House of Nwapa, which was nominated in the Best Documentary category at the Africa Movie Academy Awards, while his adaptation of Island of Happiness into an Igbo language film received recognition at the Newark International Film Festival. His documentary Other Side of History, focusing on Emeka Ojukwu, was screened at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
The ANA/King Dakolo Prize for Fiction 2026 is part of the Association of Nigerian Authors’ annual literary awards. ANA says its 2026 awards cover published works of fiction, poetry, drama, literary criticism, nonfiction and children’s literature. The association opened registration earlier this year and scheduled the presentation of the winners for its annual convention.
With Murder in Orania, Nwelue returns to the ANA narrative conversation with a novel that takes crime at its center and uses it to interrogate the larger structures surrounding justice, identity, and power.
The winner of the ANA/King Dakolo Prize for Fiction will be announced at the 2026 ANA International Annual Convention, scheduled for October 29 to November 1.
