Protest: Governor Yusuf confirms thugs took Ganduje corruption case documents in court

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf confirmed on Wednesday that suspected hoodlums made off with documents related to corruption allegations against his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje, when they stormed the state High Court during last week’s #EndBadGovernance protests in the state.

The Governor, according to a statement delivered by his Press Secretary, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, revealed this when he visited the court to assess the damage to the facility.

He was accompanied on the trip by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Isah Dederi, the Chief Registrar of the High Court, Abdullahi Ado Bayero, and other officials of the state judiciary.

Yusuf regretted that the perpetrators damaged a number of units at the court and took away goods.

He said the state Chief Justice’s office was among the units affected and estimated losses at Rp1 billion.

He alleged that the raid was orchestrated to disrupt the former governor’s trial on corruption charges during his tenure.

The governor advised the youths in the state to shun violence at the behest of detractors and instead focus on acquiring skills for a better future.

He said: “It is unfortunate that the enemies of Kano State hired undesirables to vandalize one of its historical public buildings with the mission of avoiding corruption charges against the National Chairman of the APC and former governor of the state, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his family and aides.

“I appeal to our young generation not to be used as a tool of violence. The future is in your hands, and you must concentrate on acquiring skills for a better future.

“We will not relent in securing the lives and property of Kano State citizens. The judiciary must be protected to ensure justice for all.

“My condolences to the Chief Justice and the entire judiciary. We must be prepared to cover what was lost in the court process for the sake of the public interest.”

Yusuf imposed a 24-hour curfew in the state last week after a protest by a group of Nigerians to express their discontent over hardships and other socio-economic challenges caused by the Federal Government’s policies turned violent in the state.
