Tinubu cuts Nigeria’s delegation to UN General Assembly

President Bola Tinubu has ordered a reduction in the size of Nigeria’s official delegation to the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting in New York, United States.

The President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this at a one-day retreat organised by the State House management for heads of government agencies under its supervision on Saturday in Abuja.

He said the decision to streamline Nigeria’s delegation to the 79th UNGA session in September was part of the government’s commitment to manage resources wisely and reduce the cost of governance.

Gbajabiamila stressed the need for the State House and agencies under its supervision to ensure that their functions are guided by laws, regulations, policy decisions and presidential directives.

He said: “I just had a discussion with the president this afternoon. In the next few weeks, we will see a trial of this policy during the UN General Assembly in New York.

“During the recent protests, there was talk of reducing the cost of governance. Everyone was waiting to see if Nigeria, as before, would send the ‘largest delegation’ to the UNGA.

“Based on experience, we know that some people take advantage of the opportunity of the international meeting to take care of their personal affairs.”

He said the president directed that anyone who did not have business at the UN General Assembly should not travel to America.

The Chief of Staff appealed to the heads of institutions present at the retreat to strictly comply with the directives.
