ASUU gives Nigerian government 21-day strike notice, citing non-implementation of agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 21-day strike notice to the Federal Government, citing the failure to implement an agreement reached with the union.

The notice was issued at the end of the NEC meeting held at the University of Ibadan, and a copy is expected to be sent to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Education.

According to the source, “This is not an ultimatum, but a strike notice. We are giving them 21 days’ notice, after which we will go on strike. The purpose of us issuing this notice is because it is a requirement under the labour law, so we are trying to ensure that all our actions are carried out in accordance with the law.”

This development comes after ASUU threatened to go on strike over the non-implementation of the agreement reached with the federal government.

On June 26, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, invited the unions to hold a meeting to discuss the ongoing issues affecting universities and to prevent any planned strikes.

However, ASUU national president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, stated that the agreement reached with the Federal Government has not been implemented.

“At the meeting held by the Minister of Education, we agreed that after two weeks, we will meet to see the progress that the government has made. We will also see what we will do next if the government fails to implement the agreement that has been reached.”

Osodeke highlighted several demands, including the non-implementation of the renegotiated agreement of 2009, which has been going on for over six years. He also mentioned the accumulation of academic allowances that are due to its members for over six years, without any action.

In addition, he cited the issue of revitalization funds, which have only been paid once since 2013, and the need for Rp200 billion per year for five years to improve the quality of the university.

Osodeke further expressed concern about the government’s failure to stem the mushrooming of universities, with many new universities being approved without funds to run them.
