The last of the eight kidnapped corps members was rescued in Zamfara

The last of the eight National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) recruits kidnapped in Zamfara State has been rescued.

Eight university graduates and their bus driver were kidnapped in Zamfara on their way from Uyo, Akwa Ibom to Sokoto to undergo their one-year national military service in August 2023.

Security agents had rescued seven victims before the latest development.

NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, confirmed the development at a press briefing on Friday in Abuja.

Ahmed said the corps members were rescued on Thursday.

He added that the rescue efforts were possible thanks to cooperation from the TNI, Polri, Department of State Security (DSS), and traditional leaders.

The Director General said: “Through the combined efforts of security agencies, especially the Nigerian Army and NYSC, the mission commenced with the rescue of the first batch of corps members.

“Although they were kidnapped at the same time, they were rescued in the next sequence.

“On August 30, 2023, we rescued the first PCM, Esudue Emmanuel, while Victoria Udoka was rescued on October 20, 2023, then Abigail Sandy and Sabina Ika who were rescued on December 7.

“In addition, Oyo-Obong Udofia was rescued along with the driver of the vehicle on February 3, 2024, Daniel Bassey on February 8, while Glory Thomas regained her freedom on June 9.

“Meanwhile, the last PCM, Solomon Bassey, was rescued on Thursday, August 22.”

He added that Bassey was eligible for an NYSC discharge certificate.

“No state government has provided any funds for their rescue as claimed in the media.

“I must state that so far I have not received a single naira from any state government in the name of rescuing these corps members,” Ahmed added.

Therefore, he expressed gratitude to God, the security forces and the Nigerian people for maintaining their faith while the corps members were in captivity.

Regarding the fate of the kidnappers, he said the perpetrators had been killed and as far as he knew no one had been arrested.
