130 Yoruba groups meet in Lagos to discuss state of the country

No fewer than 130 pan-Yoruba groups will gather in Lagos on Wednesday to discuss the state of the country amid economic crisis, insecurity, hardship and calls for a halt from various groups in the country.

A statement on Saturday by the Secretary-General of the coalition that organized the meeting, Popoola Ajayi, said leaders of civil rights and community-based organizations from Ekiti, Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Kwara, Delta and Edo states would attend the meeting.

Ajayi said the summit which will be held under the theme ‘Sustainable Democracy in Nigeria: The Role of Non-state Actors,’ is expected to attract over 1,500 participants including the media, professional groups and representatives of South-West state governors among others.

“Leaders of Yoruba associations in the West African Coast and Northern Nigeria, the Middle Belt and the South-East will attend the event,” Ajayi said.

“AYDM coalition members include but are not limited to South West Professionals (SOWPROF); O’odua Peoples Congress (OPC); Agbekoya; South-West Farmers Forum (SWFAF); United Itsekiri Peoples Congress (UIPC).

“Others include ANAMMACO, representing Okada Riders in the South West; South West Students Coalition, (SWSC); O’odua Nationalist Coalition, (ONAC); Yoruba Communities Association of Northern Nigeria, (YOCANN); Ilaje Peoples Assembly; Igbimo Omo Oodua in Diaspora, Nigerian Association of Automotive Technicians, (NATA), with about 5 million registered mechanic members founded in 1953.

“We also have the Covenant Group of South-West Professionals (SOWPROF); Association of Yoruba Communities in West Africa (AYOCWA); Yoruba Artisan and Traders Association (NATA); O’odua International Democratic Movement (OIDEM); O’odua Muslim-Christian Dialogue Group (OIDEM) and many more,” he added.
