Ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, the Super Eagles opened their training camp on Monday, October 2, in Uyo.
Players have begun reporting to camp as preparations begin for important upcoming matches.
The camp will host the 23 invited players who will prepare for the AFCON qualifiers, starting with a match against Benin Republic on September 7 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Three days later, the Super Eagles will travel to Kigali to face the Amavubi (the Wasps) of Rwanda.
The Super Eagles had already suffered a 2-1 defeat against Benin Republic in the World Cup qualifiers earlier this year, making this an opportunity for the team to seek revenge against their former coach, Gernot Rohr.
Players in camp:
By 10am on Monday, seven players had already arrived in Uyo.
Among the first to arrive are:
William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi, Ademola Lookman, Olisa Ndah, Taiwo Awoniyi, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
More players, including South Africa-based goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, Victor Osimhen and former Bendel Insurance goalkeeper Amas Obasogie, are expected to join the camp later today.
Coaching Setup
Augustine Eguavoen will become the team’s new coach after the deal with new coach Bruno Labbadia fell through due to strict German tax laws.
Eguavoen, who is familiar with the Super Eagles squad, will once again take charge and bring his experience to bear in these crucial encounters.
Furthermore, Eguavoen has announced that NPFL champion coach Fidelis Ilechukwu and Daniel Ogunmodede will be his assistant coaches for the qualifiers.
Both coaches bring a wealth of Nigerian league experience – Ogunmodede’s Remo Stars finished second in the NPFL, while Ilechukwu led Rangers International to the league title.
His addition to the coaching staff is expected to be a significant boost as the team looks to get back to winning ways, having won both of their qualifying matches.
