Super Eagles interim coach Augustine Eguavoen recently spoke about his appointment, making it clear that he did not seek the position.
In an interview with the official Super Eagles channel, Eguavoen stressed that his selection was not a result of any lobbying on his part but rather a decision made by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
βI am a member of the Federation and I work as the Technical Director of the Nigerian Football Federation,β Eguavoen said. βWhen a situation like this arises and you are called, you cannot say no. It is a task that I have done; it is a duty that falls under my responsibility.β
He added: βIf the hierarchy of the Federation now feels and thinks that I can save the situation, why not? But one thing must be made clear to the public: I did not ask for this, I did not lobby for this, I did not request this, it is Godβs favor.β
Preparation and plan for the African Cup of Nations qualifiers
Ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda, Eguavoen believes in the team’s ability and strength to succeed.
βNigeria is a nation, in terms of football, that many countries respect. And in this case there is no difference. I am very, very confident that we will overcome these two games and the next ones.β
βWe have the materials, we have the players, we have the staff, we have the support, we have everything, you know. And the only thing we have to remind these players is that a few months ago they were close to being African champions. It hasnβt even been a year yet.β
Commenting on the team’s recent performance, he added: “What went wrong? It’s still them. We will do everything in our power as a technical team and of course the Federation and the Nigerians who support them. They are the ones who can turn things around.”
As for the preparation for the upcoming matches, Eguavoen said: βItβs not bad. I have spoken with them. We are still going to have a series of meetings or some meetings before the match itself.β
βI am very confident that they will go out on the pitch and make the nation proud of them. We will treat them with due respect and I have no doubt about that, because in football, if you disrespect people, you have a problem. We will play against them with a lot of respect, but hey, this is our home.β
Nigeria will face Benin and Rwanda in qualifying matches for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
