NLC President Ajaero released on bail after arrest by DSS

The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly granted administrative bail to Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero, following widespread condemnation of his arrest and detention.

Ajaero was released on Monday evening, as announced by pro-democracy activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore on social media.

The NLC also confirmed to media crews that its leader had regained his freedom.

“BREAKING: The fascist @officialABAT regime has released @NLCHeadquarters President Joe Ajaero from @OfficialDSSNG custody on bail,” Sowore wrote on X.com.

Ajaero’s arrest on Monday morning at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, while en route to the UK to attend an official event, sparked a wave of condemnation from various organisations, civil society groups, activists and prominent figures. The NLC immediately condemned the arrest, and called for his immediate and unconditional release.

In a statement issued on Monday night, the NLC’s National Administrative Council, led by Vice President Adeyanju Adewale, described Ajaero’s detention as a “brazen and illegal act” and a clear violation of workers’ rights and democratic values. The council issued an ultimatum, demanding Ajaero’s release by midnight on Monday.

“We are relieved that Joe Ajaero has been released on bail, but we remain vigilant and committed to ensuring that his rights and freedoms are fully respected,” said Adeyanju Adewale, NLC Vice President.

“The arbitrary arrest and detention of our president is a clear indication of the growing intolerance and disregard for democratic values in our country.”
