Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Tuesday slammed the Federal Government over the treatment meted out to Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) by the Department of State Services (DSS).
DSS operatives on Monday morning arrested Ajaero at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, while travelling to the UK on official duties.
On the same day, secret police surrounded the SERAP offices in Abuja.
DSS officers stormed the organization’s offices and demanded to meet with the directors.
The storming of SERAP offices came just 24 hours after the office urged President Tinubu to reverse the latest price hike at fuel pumps.
In a statement posted on his verified X account on Tuesday, the former vice president lamented that the level of repressive control under former President Bola Tinubu’s watch “surpasses even the harshest days of the military dictatorship.”
He ordered the president to focus security efforts on terrorists and bandits, not civilians.
“The increasing attacks on civil society and the media by Bola Tinubu’s government are deeply disturbing. The level of repressive control now being imposed surpasses even the harshest days of the military dictatorship.
“The recent arrest of Mr Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, while on his way to an official event, is a clear example of the regime’s ongoing campaign to intimidate and subdue organised labour.
“A few days earlier security forces detained a journalist and then claimed it was a serious mistake. What if the results had been fatal?
“Now, the Tinubu regime extends its repressive grip to encroach on @SERAPNigeria, an act that is a serious affront to our democratic values. This siege is antithetical to the principles of freedom and justice.
“It is imperative that Tinubu and his security forces turn their zeal and intimidation towards the real perpetrators of violence — terrorists and bandits — who are causing untold suffering to the Nigerian people.”
