Maiduguri Floods: NEDC Assesses Destruction, Promises Relief for Victims

The Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) has begun assessing the level of destruction caused by floods that have devastated parts of Maiduguri and its environs, to decide on the area of intervention.

The director general of the commission, Mr Mohammed Alkali, stated this on Wednesday during a briefing in Maiduguri.

Alkali, while expressing solidarity with the victims, pledged to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to cushion the effects of the flood disaster.

He said: “This is an unfortunate incident and I advise those living in flood-prone areas to exercise extreme caution and avoid those areas for their own safety.”

He said the commission would temporarily engage with the state government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide support to the victims.

It also provided relief materials to the victims through the NEDC, pending the completion of the ongoing investigations into the causes of the flood.
