The Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed 49 people have died in floods and windstorms that affected 27 local government areas in the state this year.
The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Alhaji Isyaku Abdullahi-Kubarachi, disclosed this while briefing journalists on Wednesday in Kano.
He said 226 communities were affected by the incident.
He recalled that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) had earlier predicted flooding in 14 LGAs.

Abdullahi-Kubarachi listed the affected areas as including Tudun Wada, Gwale, Wudil, Danbatta, Ajingi, Dala, Gwarzo, Madobi, Bichi, Kano City, Karaye, Tarauni, Minjibir, Bebeji, Rogo, Shanono, Kabo, Garin Malam and Ungogo.
Others are Kumbotso, Nasarawa, Kura, Dawakin Kudu, Dawakin Tofa, Gezawa, Rogo and Bagwai LGAs.
He noted that the floods damaged 6,583 houses and affected 38,814 people.
The SEMA chief added: “8,289 agricultural lands equivalent to ‘36,265 hectares’ were destroyed, 1,414 people were displaced and 139 people were injured.
“SEMA in collaboration with relevant stakeholders held a number of workshops to propose various ways to reduce environmental hazards, especially flooding.”
