The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bauchi Zone, on Saturday slammed university administrators in the country over alleged victimization of its members.
The union made its position known at a meeting of the Zonal Executive Council held at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi.
ASUU Zonal Coordinator, Prof. OA Timothy Namo, who read a prepared text at a press briefing at the end of the meeting, said the union had declared September 10 as the National Day of Solidarity for its members who fell victim in some universities across the country.
He said: “The universities include Lagos State University (LASU), Ojoo, Kogi State University (KSU), Anyigba; Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki; Ambrose Ali University (AAU), Ekpoma; Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam.”
“All Union Branches and Zones are directed to organize programmes and press conferences to commemorate the day. Bauchi Zone has decided to organize this press conference in line with the Union’s directive.”
“We have discovered the unjustifiable and extremely painful hardships being inflicted on our colleagues at these universities. Our union is concerned that the respective Visitors and Administrators of these universities are consistently harming our members through malicious acts including, but not limited to, termination of employment, suspension from employment, deduction of salaries and benefits, denial and delay of promotions, exclusion from mandatory meetings and non-payment of union dues and other third party deductions.
“Undoubtedly, Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma is the hottest and epicentre of crime and victimisation of our members.
“At Ambrose Ali University (AAU), Ekpoma, there has also been a continuous tussle between the State Government/University Administration and the union, which has led to the seizure of salaries of some of our committed members for months, non-payment of third party deductions, and autocratic management of the university using the Special Intervention Team (SIT) in contravention of the university constitution.”
“We hope that the newly formed Board of Directors will run the University in accordance with the applicable laws and resolve all issues including outstanding salaries owed to our members and pending promotions.”
