NSCDC rescues 12-year-old girl who was abused by her parents for two years

A 12-year-old girl who was locked up and tortured by her parents on charges of being a child witch has been rescued by officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Akwa Ibom State.

The State Commandant of NSCDC, Eluyemi Eluwade, who disclosed this at a press conference in Uyo on Saturday, said the victim identified as Bright Sunday, was allegedly locked up in a dilapidated building by his 38-year-old father, Ndifreke Sunday, together with his stepmother, Mrs. Victory Sunday, both from Ikot Ukporo Idoro Village in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of ​​the state.

Eluwade said the rescue of the victim and subsequent arrest of the suspect followed a complaint from the country’s Ministry of Justice about the suspect torturing the victim.

“The arrest was made on Tuesday, September 10, at Ikot Ukporo Idoro Village in Ibiono Ibom LGA, Akwa Ibom State, following a complaint from the Ministry of Justice about the suspect’s inhumane treatment of his daughter,” Eluwade said.

He added that the suspects were arrested for robbery and child abuse in accordance with Article 10 of the Law on the Prohibition of Violence against Persons of 2020.

“The suspects confessed to locking up the child because she claimed to be a witch and was responsible for her father’s suffering,” Eluwade said.

The victim, who also spoke to journalists during the talks, said her father and stepmother locked her in a dilapidated room, deprived her of food and baths, and subjected her to constant beatings.

He admitted that he was only given food once every two days, could bathe a maximum of twice a month, and was not given any education.
